Description
Elegant and easy-to-make skewers featuring fresh mozzarella, sweet cherry tomatoes, aromatic basil, and savory prosciutto, all drizzled with a rich balsamic glaze. A perfect, visually stunning appetizer for any holiday gathering.
Ingredients
1 pint cherry or grape tomatoes
1 (8-ounce) container fresh bocconcini (small mozzarella balls), drained and patted dry
1 bunch fresh basil leaves, picked and washed
4 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto (optional), torn into small pieces
1 cup good quality balsamic vinegar (for homemade glaze, or use store-bought glaze)
24 small wooden or bamboo skewers
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare your ingredients. Drain the bocconcini if they are packed in water and gently pat them dry with a paper towel. Wash and dry the cherry tomatoes and basil leaves. If using, unroll your prosciutto and gently tear or cut it into smaller, manageable pieces that can be easily folded.
Step 2: Assemble the skewers. For each skewer, start with a cherry tomato, then fold a basil leaf in half (or use a small leaf whole), thread it onto the skewer, followed by a bocconcini ball. If using prosciutto, fold a small piece and thread it next. Repeat this pattern once or twice more, depending on the length of your skewer, ensuring you end with a tomato or mozzarella ball for visual appeal. Arrange the finished Christmas recipes appetizers on a large platter.
Step 3: Prepare the balsamic glaze (if making your own). In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup of good quality balsamic vinegar to a gentle simmer over medium-low heat. Let it gently bubble and reduce for 10-15 minutes, or until it has thickened to a syrupy consistency. It should coat the back of a spoon. Be careful not to let it burn. Let it cool slightly before using.
Step 4: Drizzle and serve. Just before serving, generously drizzle the balsamic glaze over all the assembled Caprese skewers. You can also add a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper for extra flavor. These Christmas recipes appetizers are best served immediately after glazing to prevent the basil from wilting too much and the tomatoes from becoming soggy.
Notes
For best results, use the freshest ingredients possible. Drizzle with glaze just before serving. Can be assembled a few hours ahead and refrigerated, but add glaze last. These skewers are easily customizable to your taste and dietary preferences.
