Description

A rich, velvety homemade hot chocolate mix recipe that's perfect for cozy evenings, thoughtful gifts, and customizable indulgence. Far superior to store-bought!

Ingredients

Scale

3 cups granulated sugar
2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed recommended)
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups powdered milk (optional, for creamier results)
1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)

Instructions

Step 1: In a very large mixing bowl, combine the granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt. If you’re including powdered milk and instant espresso powder, add them to the bowl now as well.
Step 2: Whisk all the dry ingredients together thoroughly. This is a crucial step to ensure that the cocoa powder, sugar, and any optional ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the mix. Whisk until the color is uniform and there are no lumps of cocoa powder.
Step 3: Once everything is well combined, transfer the homemade hot chocolate mix to an airtight container. Glass jars with tight-fitting lids work wonderfully for this.
Step 4: Store the homemade hot chocolate mix in a cool, dark pantry. It will stay fresh for up to 6 months.
Step 5: To prepare a single serving: spoon about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of your homemade hot chocolate mix into a mug.
Step 6: Heat 1 cup of milk (dairy or non-dairy) in a small saucepan over medium heat, or in the microwave until hot but not boiling.
Step 7: Pour the hot milk over the hot chocolate mix in your mug. Stir vigorously until the mix is completely dissolved and the liquid is smooth and uniform.
Step 8: Garnish as desired and enjoy your delicious homemade hot chocolate!

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months. For an extra rich cup, use whole milk or a mix of milk and cream. This homemade hot chocolate mix recipe is perfect for customized flavors.
