Description

A customizable and easy-to-make homemade hot cocoa mix that creates rich, creamy, and comforting hot chocolate. Perfect for cozy evenings or thoughtful gifts.

Ingredients

Scale

1.5 cups Dutch-processed cocoa powder
2 cups granulated sugar
1.5 cups powdered whole milk or dairy-free creamer powder
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
Optional: 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Optional: 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (for Mexican hot cocoa)
Optional: 1-2 teaspoons instant espresso powder

Instructions

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients. Lay out all your measured ingredients: cocoa powder, granulated sugar, powdered milk/creamer, a pinch of salt, and any optional spices you wish to add.
Step 2: Sift the Dry Ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, powdered milk or creamer, and salt. Use a fine-mesh sieve to sift these ingredients together to prevent clumps and ensure a smooth, uniform mix.
Step 3: Whisk Thoroughly. Once sifted, whisk all the ingredients together vigorously for at least 1-2 minutes until every component is evenly distributed.
Step 4: Add Optional Spices (if using). If incorporating spices like ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or instant espresso powder, add them now and whisk again until fully combined.
Step 5: Store Your Mix. Transfer your freshly made hot cocoa mix into an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dark pantry.
Step 6: Prepare a Mug of Hot Cocoa. To enjoy, scoop 2-3 tablespoons of your homemade hot cocoa mix into your favorite mug.
Step 7: Heat Your Liquid. Heat 8-10 ounces of milk (dairy or non-dairy) or hot water until steaming hot, but not boiling. For the creamiest results, milk is preferred.
Step 8: Combine and Stir. Pour the hot liquid over the mix in your mug. Stir well with a spoon or whisk until the powder is completely dissolved and no lumps remain.
Step 9: Taste and Adjust. Take a small sip. If you prefer it sweeter, add a touch more sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup. If it’s too rich, add a splash more hot milk or water.
Step 10: Garnish and Enjoy! Top your hot cocoa with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or a sprinkle of cinnamon. Savor every warm, comforting sip!

Notes

For an extra rich hot chocolate, use whole milk or a non-dairy alternative like oat milk. Adjust sweetness to your preference. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
