Description
This Popping cranberries recipe delivers an incredibly fresh, vibrant, and perfectly balanced sweet-tart taste. It's surprisingly easy to make and becomes a beautiful, jewel-toned sauce perfect for holidays or everyday enjoyment.
Ingredients
1 (12-ounce) bag fresh cranberries, rinsed and picked over
1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
1/2 cup fresh orange juice (from 1-2 oranges)
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon orange zest (from the same orange)
Instructions
Step 1: Combine the cranberries, granulated sugar, orange juice, and water in a medium saucepan. Stir gently to combine.
Step 2: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Step 3: Continue to simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until most of the cranberries have burst (popped) and the sauce has thickened. It will thicken further as it cools.
Step 4: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the fresh orange zest. If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can gently mash some of the cranberries with a fork or potato masher.
Step 5: Transfer the cranberry sauce to a heatproof bowl or jar and let it cool completely to room temperature. Once cool, cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to fully thicken.
Notes
For best flavor, make this cranberry sauce at least a few hours or even a day ahead of time to allow the flavors to fully develop. It stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
