A moist and tender red velvet cake recipe cake with a hint of cocoa and a rich cream cheese frosting.
Ingredients
2.5 cups cake flour
1.5 cups granulated sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cocoa powder
1.5 cups vegetable oil
1 cup buttermilk, room temperature
2 large eggs, room temperature
2 tbsp red food coloring
1 tsp distilled white vinegar
1 tsp vanilla extract
16 oz cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
Step 2: In a large bowl, sift together the cake flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
Step 3: In a separate bowl, whisk the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla until smooth.
Step 4: Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
Step 5: Divide the batter between the pans and bake for 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
Step 6: Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 7: For the frosting, beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until fluffy.
